How to Wear a Monochromatic Outfit

I love monochromatic outfits because they allow you to achieve a sleek, rich and contemporary look, but without much effort and without breaking the bank. Before we get into how to style a monochromatic outfit, let’s clear up an important question.

What is Monochromatic?

The definition of monochromatic is containing or using only one color. When you are styling a monochromatic outfit you work from one color or hue, with varying tints and shades. So how do you wear a monochromatic outfit?

Monochromatic Outfit Style Tips

First, decide on what color you would like to wear. For my monochromatic outfit, I chose brown. My over the knee boots from Steve Madden were my statement piece so I styled everything around those. When you styling a monochromatic outfit, it’s best to pick a “hero” or statement piece and work from there. This makes styling the outfit easier and eliminates unnecessary stress.

Since my boots were a darker shade of brown, my other pieces needed to be lighter hues in order to achieve balance. I found the perfect caramel shade in a wool blend coat from Zara (similar item). The cream high collar knit bodysuit, also from Zara, balanced out the varying shades of brown in my boots, wool blend coat and plaid mini skirt.

Speaking of plaid, my second style tip on how to wear a monochromatic outfit is to incorporate patterns. Patterns help to break up the solid blocks of color and adds visual interest. I achieved this with a skirt but you can also add in patterns with accessories such as a scarf. My plaid mini skirt is from Express. You can find a similar one here from Lulus.
